A new year grounded in connection and care
A message from Liz Kelly, Te Tumu Whakarae | CEO
Tēnā koutou katoa, and a very warm welcome to 2026.
I hope the summer break gave you the chance to slow down, breathe a little deeper, and spend time with the people and places that matter most.
We know how important it is to pause and recharge. Rest is not a luxury – it is part of how we look after ourselves and one another, so we can return with energy, clarity, and hope for the year ahead.
For me personally, this summer will always be special. One of the highlights was celebrating my daughter’s wedding. Standing alongside our whānau and friends, sharing laughter, stories, and aroha, was a powerful reminder of what really grounds us.
Those moments of connection – across generations, cultures, and friendships – refill the cup in a way nothing else can. I came back to work feeling deeply grateful and more committed than ever to the kaupapa that brings us together.
As we step into this new year, I feel a real sense of momentum.
Last year showed us what is possible when a community wraps around its people. Together, we supported whānau through challenges, celebrated achievements big and small, and continued to build a Whānau Centre that is responsive, welcoming, and grounded in manaakitanga.
That collective effort – from kaimahi, partners, and the whānau who trust us – is something to be proud of.
This year also brings an election, and with it, a lot of noise and competing voices. At Porirua Whānau Centre, our focus remains steady.
Regardless of the political landscape, our commitment is to wellbeing, equity, and empowering whānau to be more self-reliant.
We will continue to advocate in ways that are respectful, grounded, and centred on lived experience.
As we move forward together, my hope is that 2026 is a year of connection, courage, and care.
A year where we keep showing up for one another, listening deeply, and working collectively toward a Porirua where every whānau can thrive.
